For Sanjay and his family, self-direction has meant something simple and powerful: choice. Before self-direction, Sanjay attended a traditional day program with set routines and group-based schedules. While those programs work well for many individuals, they did not reflect Sanjay’s interests or the pace at which he thrives. He often felt uncomfortable and disengaged, and his family recognized that a more individualized approach would better support his growth and well-being. After the pandemic, his family made the decision to explore a different model. Through self-direction, Sanjay was able to build days around the things he enjoys and the goals that matter most to him.

Now 32, Sanjay’s life is filled with meaningful activities. Instead of spending his days in one setting, he chooses how to engage with his community. He enjoys boxing, exercising twice a week, going to the library, taking walks, and volunteering regularly. Every Friday, he delivers meals through Meals on Wheels. Once a month, he helps at a charity closet. He also prepares sandwiches at a church to support people experiencing homelessness. These activities have helped Sanjay grow more confident, more independent, and more comfortable interacting with others.

Self-direction has also supported Sanjay’s emotional well-being. Through counseling and a steady routine tailored to his needs, his family has seen him become calmer and happier at home. Being active in the community and working with a variety of people has helped him strengthen social skills and navigate relationships in ways that feel natural and affirming.

Sanjay and his parents actively seek opportunities that will help him continue to grow, including employment training, community college programs, and meaningful work that matches his abilities. As a high-functioning adult, his family wants him to be challenged, engaged, and supported in ways that reflect his potential and goals.

Looking ahead, Sanjay’s parents hope for a future where he can work part time, earn his own income, and eventually live more independently in a community setting with the right structure in place. Sanjay’s mother says she hopes for “a life where Sanjay is busy, fulfilled, and surrounded by opportunities that allow him to thrive.”

For Sanjay and his family, the greatest benefit of self-direction has been having meaningful control over daily life and the ability to choose what brings purpose and joy. It allows Sanjay to move forward at his own pace, pursue his interests, and build a life that feels truly his own.
