As part of our My Life, My Choice campaign, SDAN Maryland is honored to share Shelby’s story, a powerful example of how self-directed services can support a full, connected, and meaningful life. Shelby lives at home with her mother and brother, where the three of them work as a team to coordinate her complex health needs. Each day, they manage schedules for caregivers with specialized medical certifications, all under the guidance and support of her delegating nurse. This partnership allows Shelby to receive the care she needs while maintaining the independence and flexibility that self-direction offers.

Self-direction has given Shelby the space to embrace the things she loves most. Animals (especially soft, cuddly dogs) bring joy to her life, and she has a special love for babies. Shelby cherishes time with her nieces and nephews, and she loves meeting new little ones at her church. Music is another one of her passions; she sings along each week during church services and enjoys karaoke, particularly when she can sing her favorite country songs.

With the support of her self-directed team, Shelby stays deeply connected to her extended family. She travels across the United States to visit cousins, grandparents, aunts, and uncles, maintaining strong bonds with loved ones. Closer to home, she fills her days with activities she chooses – going to local theaters, exploring parks, visiting museums, and enjoying meals at her favorite restaurants. These outings give her a sense of freedom and excitement, allowing her to participate fully in her community.

At home, Shelby shines as a helper in the kitchen. She enjoys cooking and assisting with snacks and meals for herself, her family, and guests who visit their home. These moments bring her pride, purpose, and joy. Through self-direction, Shelby continues to shape a life rooted in family, faith, community, and the freedom to choose what each day looks like. Her story reflects the heart of My Life, My Choice: empowering individuals to live life on their terms.
