SDAN of Maryland proudly presents Jennifer, a participant whose life and goals reflect the heart of our My Life My Choice campaign. Jennifer’s future is built around what matters most to her: being close to family, contributing to a lively home, and staying connected to her community. She envisions living in her own home near her sister or continuing to share life with her family — a place where visitors are welcome, conversations are meaningful, and her independence is respected.

Encouragement is one of Jennifer’s greatest gifts. She loves motivating others, especially children, and thrives when she can offer support through cheering, high-fives, humor, and kindness. She also enjoys faith-filled conversations with relatives and embraces the busy, welcoming household she shares with her sister. For Jennifer, these relationships are the foundation of a fulfilling life.

Through self-direction, Jennifer has gained more opportunities to learn, grow, and advocate for herself. She is working closely with a speech-language pathologist to expand how she communicates, including using a communication device to express her thoughts and opinions. She remains fully involved in her health decisions and appreciates having her sister’s support while still maintaining her autonomy. Her goal is to continue developing the skills and tools that allow her voice to be heard clearly.

Jennifer’s life is supported by a combination of dedicated family members and self-directed services, including personal supports, nursing delegation, respite, and support broker assistance. She is also exploring added help to manage the day-to-day tasks that come with living a self-directed life. What guides her future is simple yet powerful: a belief in choice, a strong sense of family, and the confidence that she can shape her own path. Her story embodies what the My Life My Choice campaign celebrates — people directing their lives with dignity, purpose, and the support they choose.
